Making a One-Time Sponsorship Donation

You can allow one-time donations to be made to sponsorships by checking the box for Allow one-time donations? in the Sponsorship Type edit screen.

When one-time donations allowed, supporters can give a one-time donation, with the purpose of that sponsorship, to a sponsorship.

Important Notes:

  • Making a one-time donation will not initiate a recurring sponsorship with the supporter.
  • Most often, one-time donations are used by supporters who would like to give an extra gift to their sponsorship during a birthday or holiday, for example.
  • If the supporter is a current sponsor of the sponsorship they are giving a one-time donations towards, their one-time donation will not count towards their recurring sponsorship.
  • One-time donations will be listed in the supporter’s profile under Donations > Donation History.
  • One-time donations will not be listed on the sponsorship-supporter record if the one-time donation is made from a current sponsor.
  • One-time donations will not alter the recurring giving amount for the sponsorship. To do this, please refer to our Updating Sponsorships Costs and Shares article.

Allowing One-Time Sponsorship Donations For Sponsors

To allow supporters to make a one-time donation from your public sponsorships page under the Sponsorship Level dropdown menu, you will need to check an option in the sponsorship’s sponsorship type.

  • Go to Sponsorships > Sponsorship Types
  • Click Edit next to the Sponsorship Type
  • You’ll see the checkbox to Allow one-time donations?
  • Check that box and scroll down to Save Changes

Once checked, the One Time Donation option will be shown on your public sponsorship page under the Sponsorship Level dropdown for a donor to select for any sponsorships you have included in that Sponsorship Type.

A donor will need to click One-Time Donation, then Sponsor Now.

Important Note: Since this is a one-time donation, this is simply a donation, not an official recurring sponsorship.

The supporter will then enter in their donation amount on the donation page. They will see that the Purpose will be Donation for {name of sponsorship}.

Once the supporter completes the donation, the one-time donation will be shown in their Donation History:

If the supporter is a current sponsor, the one-time donation will not be shown on their Sponsorship Supporter record.

One-Time Sponsorship Donation from Donor Portal

Once a supporter is actively donating to a sponsorship, the supporter can add a one-time donation to their sponsorship when logged into their Donor Portal. This is a means for the supporter to give an extra donation to their sponsorship, most commonly for a birthday or holiday.

This one-time donation will be included on their Sponsorship Supporter record and counted towards their Total Given for their sponsorship.

Note: This does not require that the Allow One-Time Donations box be checked for the sponsorship’s Sponsorship Type.

To do so, a supporter will need to login to their Donor Portal.

  • Next to My Sponsorships, click See All
  • Next to the sponsorship, click the green New Donation button
  • This will pre-populate a Donation Form with the purpose being the Sponsorship. In this example, Zola.
  • You’ll see that the frequency is set to One-Time.
  • From there, the supporter can simply add in the donation amount and proceed with completing their donation using their stored contact and payment information.

One-Time Sponsorship Donation As a Admin

Additionally, you can add a one-time donation as an Admin on behalf of a current sponsor and direct it to their sponsorship.

Since this is an Admin directing a one-time donation towards a current sponsorship, this one-time donation will be included on their Sponsorship Supporter record and counted towards their Total Given for their sponsorship.

However, as noted in yellow, this does not initiate a recurring sponsorship for the supporter. This is a one-time donation. Only current sponsorships for that supporter should be shown in the drop-down box.

Recurring sponsorships must be initiated from the sponsorship record to be set up correctly. Please refer to our Starting a Sponsorship article to learn more.

  • Go to Donations > + New Donation
  • Type in your Supporter’s name
  • Add an amount and under Purpose, choose Sponsorship
  • The supporter’s sponsorships will auto-populate allowing you to select the Sponsorship
    • To split the donation if there are more than one Sponsorship, click Add Purpose and do the same for the new Sponsorship
  • Select the Payment Type
  • Since this is not meant to be a recurring donation, do not check the box to Make a recurring donation.
  • Click Create
  • If this is an Online donation, you will then be able to Select the Payment Method to use from your supporter’s payment methods on file on the next screen to complete the donation.

Once completed, the one-time donation will be listed in the supporter’s Sponsorship-Supporter record and the amount will count towards the Total Given for the sponsorship.
